New site!

Right, so back by popular demand, the restaurant review site, but in a new format. Many of these reviews are old, just haven't gotten around to posting them until now. I'll try to date them where I can. You can still check out the old site here

Unlike other foodie bloggers, I however don't own any fancy camera gear - just an old Sony digital camera that works. Maybe if it breaks I'll look at getting something else, but likely just another simple point and shoot type thing that I won't break easily!

So here we go!

"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.

To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.

Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.

Oh, I'll accomodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine."

The Flat Crepes and Cafe

The Flat Crepes & Cafe

Armed with a Dealfind groupon, my sister, niece, and I headed to a small cafe and creperie in search of good eats.   As we're all partial to crepes, both sweet and savoury, this figured to be a worthwhile trip.

First impression - the place is a little odd, more akin to a cafe that is part of a gym than a standalone restaurant, but it has a bit of charm to it, with both a small main floor area, and a raised area for seating.  It is standard cafe ordering; not wait-staffed per se, other than for them to bring you your order or to remove your plates.

There isn't a huge menu, but what was on it looked delicious.   I went for the Peking Duck crepe, while my sister chose the Smoked Salmon, and Niece the Turkey/Cranberry crepe.  They definitely smelled great as they hit the table, but we all noticed one thing - that there really wasn't much in the way of fillings.   Also - the plating is pretty ordinary.  Granted, for the price of the crepe ($7.50 max), I was expecting paper plates and plastic cutlery...  and it still came on proper plates with silverware.

The taste of the crepes were excellent - but again, the lack of filling didn't help.  The pictures from their menus are fairly stuffed crepes... these are extremely light on the fillings.   The duck was more like a 'pulled pork' than a Peking duck, with the duck actually marinaded in sauce, or so it seemed, and the cucumbers weren't in long slices, instead, half rounds.   The smoked salmon tasted great, but needed a bit more boursin to fill out the crepe, and the strange bits of asparagus in that crepe didn't add anything other than a texture change.   The turkey and cranberry was alright, but nothing special, and the cranberry a bit sweet for our liking.  Compared to other crepes, these were quite light, but we weren't sure that the crepe batter was the correct one for savoury types.

We followed the savoury crepes up with dessert crepes, this time a raspberry and cream, an apple-cinnamon, and a seasonal fruit mix with Oliver's chocolate.   Again, the fillings weren't really enough to truly satisfy, but the flavours were good.   This time the crepe batter made sense, and I found that I'd recommend these dessert crepes over the savoury.

With all that said, would I go back?  Probably not.   Why?  There are a few other places in town, including A Ladybug whose crepes are (in my opinion) better than these.   I do however like the pricing, as these are cheaper than Subway subs, albeit far less filling.

Taste:   7.5 - Needs more filling!

Presentation:  6.0 - There is a lot you can do to decorate a crepe up, and this just didn't happen

Ambiance:   7.0 - comfortable, small space

Prices:   under $8 for almost everything on the menu!  Great if you want just a light bite.
