New site!

Right, so back by popular demand, the restaurant review site, but in a new format. Many of these reviews are old, just haven't gotten around to posting them until now. I'll try to date them where I can. You can still check out the old site here

Unlike other foodie bloggers, I however don't own any fancy camera gear - just an old Sony digital camera that works. Maybe if it breaks I'll look at getting something else, but likely just another simple point and shoot type thing that I won't break easily!

So here we go!

"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.

To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.

Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.

Oh, I'll accomodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine."

Maharajah

Maharajah Restaurant

A former resident of the downtown scene, Maharajah was forced to move due to unsafe building issues down in their old location.   Luckily for me, they took over an Indian takeout restaurant in my neighbourhood, much to my delight.   I was driving home one day from a late night at work, and didn't have much time or desire to make dinner, so decided to pop in and order a 'dinner box' as advertised on a billboard along the roadside.

The dinner box advertised came with rice, naan, and two selections from the curry menu, so being the vegetarian that I am, I ordered the butter chicken, and the lamb curry.   I was notified that it'd be 15 minutes, so I sat down on one of the two chairs at the front of the takeout desk to wait for my order.   The aroma wafting out of the kitchen did make me even hungrier while waiting.

I was surprised both when in under 10 minutes, I was given my order, and secondly, at the size of the bag I received.   I rushed home to discover a very large box - twice the size of a traditional Chinese white takeout box, and a big foil package containing my naan.   The naan was not the small triangle I'd expected (like the previous owners' portions), but the entire oval shape, uncut, and the next surprise for me, was the large piece of tandoori chicken in the middle of my dinner box.

Suffice it to say this meal lasted me two meals, and I was very happy with the level of spice, flavour, and heat (and amount of food!).   Not too spicy, not too mild!   While the dinner box is more expensive than fast food, at $13.99, it was a significant size, and I'd suggest it to anyone looking for a relatively fast meal in the Discovery Ridge area.

Taste: 8.5 - good takeout Indian food!

Presentation: N/A

Ambiance:   6.0 - just an order counter, really

Service:   9.0 - very fast and pleasant to order from, unlike the previous joint.

Prices:   $14 for the dinner box, average entrees being around the same.
