New site!

Right, so back by popular demand, the restaurant review site, but in a new format. Many of these reviews are old, just haven't gotten around to posting them until now. I'll try to date them where I can. You can still check out the old site here

Unlike other foodie bloggers, I however don't own any fancy camera gear - just an old Sony digital camera that works. Maybe if it breaks I'll look at getting something else, but likely just another simple point and shoot type thing that I won't break easily!

So here we go!

"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.

To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.

Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.

Oh, I'll accomodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine."

Muku Ramen

Muku Ramen
326 14 St NW

I'd just gotten back to Calgary after the long weekend and was about to head home when a friend called asking if I had time to meet up for lunch.   As I'm a sucker for food (good or not), I agreed readily and sped off to meet her.   Unfortunately, our first choice of korean fried chicken was closed for the holiday Monday, so we quickly changed course and ended up at Muku for noodles.

I'm not usually huge on ramen and prefer udon, but after having had a weekend of pretty heavy Caucasian foods, a nice light Asian noodle felt like something good to eat for lunch.   The location itself is the original location of Globefish, one of my formerly favourite sushi joints - it's run by the same owners, but focuses purely on ramen.  The menu isn't huge, but enough that you spend a bit of time trying to figure out exactly what you want.  There are even set courses, that have noodles, rice, and salad, so a decent meal in all.

Both my friend and I however, settled on their summer special, a cold ramen, topped with shrimp, pork slices, and baby corn.   Ramen in general is known by most of us as instant noodles, a cheap meal for most starving students, full of salt, and msg, and all that other good preservative stuff.   Real japanese ramen on the other hand, may look like it, but has a nice chew, kinda springy, and with the right broth, very tasty on a cold night.   I guess it's kinda like eating a fresh pasta vs the store bought dried/overcooked/undercooked stuff.  I was happy to get a cold version, since it was stupidly hot out.

I'll let the pictures do the talking, but I can say that I want to eat this again!   It was so good...   my friend normally doesn't like shrimp, yet she ate all of hers, and mentioned how tasty they were.   The only criticism would be that the pork was a bit dry for both of our liking.

I'm definitely going to have to go back, especially on a cold winter's day to have some of the hot ramen.
