So for my Dad's birthday, we went somewhere we normally wouldn't go, and met up at the Keg across from Foothills Hospital. As mentioned, not normally somewhere we, and I especially, wouldn't go, just due to it being a chain restaurant, and me preferring to visit anything but. Sysco Foodservices products galore!
This may sound a little odd, but my Mom is nuts about hockey. So much so that she wanted to watch the Philly/Pittsburgh game (Game 5). I think she actually watches more than I do - granted, the series has been excellent, so no complaints here. But I digress. We ended up down in the lounge, even though we had reservations for a table up in the dining area, so we could watch the game.
First things first - the lounge is a bit dark, probably a bit too dark for my liking, but to each their own. Also, unlike many of the Keg commercials you see on TV with a fairly new and modern bar area, and upscale people sitting there, this Keg hasn't been updated I think in some time, so it had an older feel to it.
While waiting for my sister to arrive, we ordered a couple appetizers, namely the calamari and the crab, parmesan, and spinach dip. As I'd not brought my camera, no pictures were taken. I'm personally not a big fan of squid, so I refrained from trying the calamari, but the dip was quite nice - could have used a few more chips for the dip - or maybe some pita crisps for a better combination, but overall, good flavour. We also shared a couple of Caesar salads, which lacked character, and a bit bland.
We then dug into our main courses, with a selection ranging from the classic NY strip dinner, to the special of the season - sirloin steak and dungeness crab. Overall, each meal was cooked to the proper temperature, and while my niece would have preferred her steak still mooing, it was done according to how she'd asked - rare.
We finished up with a medley of desserts - as this was a special occasion, our waitress provided my Dad with a free dessert, and we decided to try pretty much everything else on the menu. I found the butter tart far too sweet, but the brownie was moist and dense, and very chocolatey, while the Passion creme brulee lacked a bit of tartness I would have expected from passion fruit. Creamy though.
I have to say that our service was excellent, even while sitting in the lounge, and our waitress was well on the ball on bringing us refills for drinks promptly. Interestingly enough, better than some of the higher end steakhouses I've been to in recent memory. I'd go back.
Taste: 8.5 - Well-prepared meals all around, other than the salads.
Presentation: 8.0 - The vegetables were a bit thrown together, and in large chunks. The plate of asparagus certainly lacked some pizazz.
Ambiance: 6.5 - Dark, even for a lounge.
Prices: $20-35 per entree, under $7 for desserts - for the size of some of them, decent priced.
