New site!

Right, so back by popular demand, the restaurant review site, but in a new format. Many of these reviews are old, just haven't gotten around to posting them until now. I'll try to date them where I can. You can still check out the old site here

Unlike other foodie bloggers, I however don't own any fancy camera gear - just an old Sony digital camera that works. Maybe if it breaks I'll look at getting something else, but likely just another simple point and shoot type thing that I won't break easily!

So here we go!

"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.

To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.

Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.

Oh, I'll accomodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine."

A Ladybug Cafe

A Ladybug Cafe
2132-10 Aspen Stone Blvd SW

I've been meaning to write something about this little cafe for some time, but while they were at the Calgary Farmer's Market before it moved from the Currie Barracks, the owner was very protective of the product and hated if anyone took pictures.   It was a shame, as I think she could have been a lot more successful at her business had she allowed for being a bit more friendly towards foodies.

With that said, now that she's moved on to a small location up in Aspen Woods, she's too busy taking care of her customers in line, that she can't really stop you from taking pictures now.

While the prices are a little high, this place has always had a spot in my heart for its amazing pastries and crepes.   As the kitchen is quite a bit larger than their tiny booth in the Farmer's Market, they've also been able to expand their menu and selection, much to my delight.

So you can see from the pictures, there's some excellent choices, including one of my favourite eggs benedicts in the city - which has the most amazing lemon in its hollandaise, and potato galettes that I could eat every day.

The crepe you see is a specialty as well, of which they have several varieties, including seasonal ones.

Finally, the lemon tart thing there is a specialty of the bakery - called a Calgary tart.  It's essentially lemon curd in a super flaky croissant type of crust.   So good!

Taste: 9.0 - I love this place!    Presentation: 9.5 - hard to knock this presentation really. Ambiance:   8.0 - it's a bit frou frou for me, but it is a patisserie/cafe, after all Service:   7.0 - it's sometimes slow, but understandable, due to the sheer volume here.    That and it's essentially almost like a cafeteria Prices:   $10-15 per dish
