New site!

Right, so back by popular demand, the restaurant review site, but in a new format. Many of these reviews are old, just haven't gotten around to posting them until now. I'll try to date them where I can. You can still check out the old site here

Unlike other foodie bloggers, I however don't own any fancy camera gear - just an old Sony digital camera that works. Maybe if it breaks I'll look at getting something else, but likely just another simple point and shoot type thing that I won't break easily!

So here we go!

"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.

To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.

Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.

Oh, I'll accomodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine."

Mug Shotz

Mug Shotz
12, 2808 Ogden Road SE

So after partaking in the Kingsland Farmers' Market 'Night Market/Food Truck Fest', our small group of foodies decided that we'd had enough of the crowd/lines, and high prices, and had heard rumours of a great wing place in Ogden.   I'll be honest, it looks incredibly shady, but we were in for some awesome flavours.

The location itself is in a small strip mall right by Naina's Burgers (try their stuffed specialty burgers if you haven't yet!), and does not look all that friendly to your average person.   We walked in to a fairly empty pub, but the nice thing about it, was that it was fairly large, with both small and large tables, and the music was not turned on overly loud like at many of Calgary's other pubs.

The menu has a decent variety, and I'll definitely be planning several trips back to try the rest, but our group ordered the Mug Shotz Salt and Pepper (they have the 'regular' salt and pepper as well), Raspberry Chipotle, Lemon Pepper, Roasted Red Pepper and Garlic, as well as the Dill Pickle.

I've never seen a dill pickle wing with actual dill pickle bits on it, but this came that way.  The flavour of them was excellent as well, the wing not too try, and not teeny tiny, if not overly huge either.   The Red Pepper and Garlic unfortunately was too salty, but still tasty if you dusted off some of the spices.   The Mug Shotz Salt and Pepper tasted pretty much like salt and pepper squid at a chinese restaurant, and was a group favourite, while the Lemon Pepper was intensely lemony, and the Raspberry Chipotle was a subtle blend of sweet and spicy.

The one downside I'd have to say, is that we went on wing night, but even at that, a pound of wings is $8.   It's by far more expensive than your usual 25-35 cent wing night, as you get about 10 to the pound, or so.   It is however balanced by the prices of the soft drinks, generally nearly a dollar lower than the usual pubs as well.

With that said, as mentioned before, I'm definitely coming back for more!
