New site!

Right, so back by popular demand, the restaurant review site, but in a new format. Many of these reviews are old, just haven't gotten around to posting them until now. I'll try to date them where I can. You can still check out the old site here

Unlike other foodie bloggers, I however don't own any fancy camera gear - just an old Sony digital camera that works. Maybe if it breaks I'll look at getting something else, but likely just another simple point and shoot type thing that I won't break easily!

So here we go!

"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.

To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.

Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.

Oh, I'll accomodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine."

Bow Bulgogi House

Address: 3515A 17 Avenue SW

A friend and I are on a bit of a Korean food kick, and considering he's not that adventurous, we decided to hit up a fairly standard spot for Korean fare in Calgary, the Bow Bulgogi House.  It's a tiny little place located in a strip mall just off 17th avenue, and if you didn't know it was there, you'd likely pass by without ever knowing that inside housed some pretty good eats!  Unfortunately, I didn't bring my camera, so no pictures for this place for now!

Now, this isn't the smallest restaurant I've ever eaten in, but these guys have approximately 6 tables for 4 set up in total, which they can split ever so slightly for a few 2-toppers instead, but with almost no room between patrons.   We were lucky enough that there was a free table open, and perused the menu.   There's not a huge amount of items on the menu, and it diverges a bit into some Vietnamese noodles, which I'd not recommend eating here.

The goal of our excursion would be the BBQ - Gal Bi (short ribs), and Chicken Bulgogi (spicy) this night.   We also decided on an order of Jap Chae to complete the meal.   Unlike a lot of other places in the city, they cook the meal for you here, then serve it on a sizzling hot plate.   It's nice to have the meat always hot when you're eating it, but I'd have liked a bit of lettuce to go along with it - some tables got it, others didn't, so I'm not sure how they judged or gauged that.   I suppose I could have asked, but I was lazy.

The Jap Chae was good - a nice light yet sweet flavour, studded with mushrooms, random shredded vegetables, and some beef, and while it was light on the beef, I don't know that it really needed it.   The chicken was quite spicy, but tender, if very very slightly overcooked.   The short ribs were excellent, with a great marinade, and that sweet and savoury mix that I like so much.

In the end, I'd say while I've had better Korean BBQ, this place is great for the location, as there aren't that many good eateries in the SW of Calgary.   The prices are a little high, but that's what you get in suburbia.

Taste:   7.5 - As mentioned, the chicken was slightly overdone

Presentation:  8.0 - Love the hot plates!

Ambiance:   4.0 - This place looks totally run down, not sure if anything inside really matches

Prices:   $15 per entree
