New site!

Right, so back by popular demand, the restaurant review site, but in a new format. Many of these reviews are old, just haven't gotten around to posting them until now. I'll try to date them where I can. You can still check out the old site here

Unlike other foodie bloggers, I however don't own any fancy camera gear - just an old Sony digital camera that works. Maybe if it breaks I'll look at getting something else, but likely just another simple point and shoot type thing that I won't break easily!

So here we go!

"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.

To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.

Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.

Oh, I'll accomodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine."

Tuscany Sky Villas

This post will be only slightly about food, but more about the excesses that exist in Vegas.  As a member of the Advisory Board for the conference I was at, I was invited to the VIP Reception in the Tuscany Sky Villas at the LVH (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton).

First things first, this place is HUGE.  I am not sure I counted right, but there were 5-6 rooms that were all equipped as 'master' bedrooms, complete with dual bathrooms, I suppose his and hers; showers included.   Most rooms had at least one if not more hot tubs, and one room in particular had what I'd call miniature polar bear soaking pools.

This villa is on the top floor of the hotel, with a view of the rest of the city on the patio/pool area.  Unfortunately, the wind was so strong we weren't allowed to get out there.  All in all, it is a wealth of marble, travertine, and gaudy excess.

From what I understand, this is the second largest of the LVH Sky Villas, amounting to 13,200 square feet of living spaced inspired by beautiful Northern Italy. The villa features Italian marble floors and stonework, custom wall and ceiling murals, four elegantly appointed bedrooms, and a lavish courtyard and pool.  Apparently back in the day, it may not have been decorated like this, but it was Elvis' hangout.

As this was a dinner reception, we were treated to several snack-type tables with chips and dips, salsa, and guacamole, along with a table full of finger foods, fruit and vegetable trays, and a carving/chef station serving fresh tortellini with your choice of toppings, and one of the biggest roasts I've ever seen.

Anyways, I can say that while the finger foods were decent, and on par with any high-quality catered party, the roast was superb.   Guests had the choice of warmth, and the medium rare cut was so tender it seemed to melt in my mouth.   I also tried the tortellini - while the pasta itself wasn't the best, it was done just right, al dente, and the prosciutto/roasted garlic I added gave the marinara the character I wanted out of it.  Unfortunately for me, I was still full from my adventures at Hash House A Go Go the day before, so I wasn't able to appreciate the food as much!
