New site!

Right, so back by popular demand, the restaurant review site, but in a new format. Many of these reviews are old, just haven't gotten around to posting them until now. I'll try to date them where I can. You can still check out the old site here

Unlike other foodie bloggers, I however don't own any fancy camera gear - just an old Sony digital camera that works. Maybe if it breaks I'll look at getting something else, but likely just another simple point and shoot type thing that I won't break easily!

So here we go!

"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter-faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn.

To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.

Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It's healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I've worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.

Oh, I'll accomodate them, I'll rummage around for something to feed them, for a 'vegetarian plate', if called on to do so. Fourteen dollars for a few slices of grilled eggplant and zucchini suits my food cost fine."

Random Foodstuffs

This is just a few of the foods I've sampled over the course of this past spring/summer.

OEB

OEB
824 Edmonton Trail NE

So I'd been missing out on from what I'd been told, on a great little breakfast place just north of downtown on Edmonton Trail.   I'd tried going a couple times before, but both times they were closed, but this time I was fortunate.   The specialty I'd been told was poutine - not exactly any kind, but a breakfast one, that came in what appeared to be a takeout box.   I took a look at the menu online, and definitely said to myself, I had to try this place!

The Himalayan

The Himalayan
3218 17th Avenue SW Calgary, AB

I'd heard good things about a Nepalese restaurant that'd been open since late 2011, and it'd been on the list of places I had to visit for some time, but hadn't had the opportunity until now.  It's located in a very nondescript and small strip mall just up 17th Ave, and unassuming - until you step inside.  Normally, in a small restaurant like this, there's not a whole lot of character, but surprisingly, it felt like you were transported into another world as you stepped through the doors of the restaurant.   It was dark, but not so much so that you couldn't read your menu, and had a comfortable quality to the place.

A Ladybug Cafe

A Ladybug Cafe
2132-10 Aspen Stone Blvd SW

I've been meaning to write something about this little cafe for some time, but while they were at the Calgary Farmer's Market before it moved from the Currie Barracks, the owner was very protective of the product and hated if anyone took pictures.   It was a shame, as I think she could have been a lot more successful at her business had she allowed for being a bit more friendly towards foodies.

With that said, now that she's moved on to a small location up in Aspen Woods, she's too busy taking care of her customers in line, that she can't really stop you from taking pictures now.

Sloppy Hoggs Roed Hues

Sloppy Hoggs Roed Hues
9567 118 Ave Northwest

Alright, so it's been a while since I updated anything here but with the flood in Calgary and all, I've been slacking.   With that said, this place deserves a post just for the crazy that this place dishes up.
A friend had sent me a picture of something truly ridiculous gastronomically, and I had to go see if the sandwich was as good as it sounded.

Shark Club

Shark Club Calgary
7995 11 St SE

So I decided to do something a bit random, and join a Meetups.com group - this one was due to a friend who'd joined already, and I'd met a couple of the members at the Kingsland Farmers' Market Food Truck thing a couple weeks ago.  I hadn't had time to actually talk to most of the members, but I had a bit of time on Tuesday so I said, what the heck.

May Long Weekend at Kingsland Farmers' Market

Friends and I went to visit the Kingsland Farmers' Market 'Night Market' and Food Truck Festival, and below are the resulting pictures:
(I have to note, that while the food is decent, nothing really stands out from food trucks for me still, especially for the price)

Pio Peruvian Rotisserie Chicken

Pio Peruvian Rotisserie Chicken

Looking for something a little different over the long weekend for dinner, my sister and I decided to visit a Peruvian restaurant that had been rated highly by other food bloggers, Pio.   It is located in a strip mall, not far from Sunridge Mall, but in a bit of an odd location for a non-quick-serve style restaurant.

Mug Shotz

Mug Shotz
12, 2808 Ogden Road SE

So after partaking in the Kingsland Farmers' Market 'Night Market/Food Truck Fest', our small group of foodies decided that we'd had enough of the crowd/lines, and high prices, and had heard rumours of a great wing place in Ogden.   I'll be honest, it looks incredibly shady, but we were in for some awesome flavours.

This is why I'm fat, Vegas 2013 Edition

I'll write about the restaurants I've gone to over the last week, but for now, just a collection of pictures from my foodventures while in Las Vegas.
